“After 44 years of observing, playing, and recently being deeply involved in the Lawn Bowls industry - manufacturing bowls, wholesaling, retailing, sponsoring clubs, tournaments, associations, charities, and individuals, both elite and up and coming players - I have watched the popularity of the game continue to slowly decline at club and local competition level. I have experienced clubs and bowls shop retailers struggling to remain viable, and despite their exceptional ‘elite’ tournament management and promotional skills, and although they may say differently, even our National and World governing bodies struggle to stay afloat.
While at the same time I have seen the game grow as an occasional social event, thoroughly enjoyed by all who engage in it, that increase in social engagement is not translating into new bowls club memberships and registered player numbers.
